Origin Of The Jedi?

Ive seen conflicting storylines in the database on the Star Wars website, but they are very interesting. One has it that Jedi wernt the first to use Lightsabers and that they used to be like security batons for ancient republican guards or something. And the origin of the Jedi has it that there was a great "Skywalker" who had the power to use the force and he had 12 children, but some of them (most of them?) were seduced by the darkside and went Sith, and that was the fall of the republic (ok that makes all of the current plot wrong) then they say something like another called "Darklighter" (must be no relation to Gavin or Biggs) was the main Sith guy or something.
